Sydney City Centre Bus Infrastructure

posted Thursday 24 July 2014
Roads and Maritime Services needs to have certain bus facilities in place before construction of the CBD and south-east light rail commences in 2015. APTNSW made the following submission on the matter:

We refer to the specification for bus shelters in Table 3-9 of the REF. Despite the number of guidelines which such shelters are supposed to comply with, a number of existing bus shelters in the CBD and elsewhere are dysfunctional for at least one reason. There should be explicit guidelines governing all functional aspects of bus shelters.

An example of a dysfunctional shelter can be seen in the cover photograph of the GHD traffic and transport report. The York St shelter visible in the distance has a large opaque advertisement on the approach side. This advertisement breaks sight lines between passengers inside the shelter and approaching buses. Waiting passengers need a continuous clear view of approaching buses so that they can see when a suitable bus is nearing them. Good wayfinding practices should be observed in all public transport infrastructure. Another benefit of clear sight lines is that bus drivers can see waiting passengers standing for their buses.

Other aspects of bus shelter design which we consider essential and which should be incorporated into the REF and any other plan involving bus shelters are:

These requirements should all be in the REF even though some of them might be viewed as operational matters beyond the purview of RMS.
