Weekend "clearways" - minister responds

posted Sunday 1 June 2014
In our 5 March 2014 post on this site we had complained to the Minister for Roads that we objected to taxpayers having to fund alternative parking to replace those kerbside parking spaces lost to the implementation of "weekend clearways" on Sydney's arterial roads. On 15 May the minister responded through his Parliamentary Secretary.

He says "The government has established a $21 million fund over four years to help councils provide alternative parking to minimise the impact on local businesses and residents". So, apparently, the funding is to help businesses and residents, not motorists.

He adds "The clearways review is comprehensive in that it also considers the impacts of congestion on road-based public transport". More information about the Sydney Clearways Strategy is at http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/.

APTNSW remains unconvinced. Subsidising car parking at times of severe traffic congestion is not the way to restrain car use, which has been the recurring rhetorical theme of urban transport planning documents for the last four decades.
