Victoria's Auditor-General on managing traffic congestion

posted Friday 3 May 2013
The Auditor-General for the state of Victoria has published a report on the management of traffic congestion, particularly around Melbourne.

The report concludes "[Victoria's] approach to congestion management remains dominated by expensive supply-side initiatives focused on increasing capacity with little evident attention to demand management alternatives. While the immediate benefits from these initiatives are clear, the absence of demand management measures means it cannot be assured that they are the most economical and cost-effective options in the longer term." Recommendations include references to public transport.

See http://www.audit.vic.gov.au/publications/20130417-Managing-Traffic-Congestion/20130417-Managing-Traffic-Congestion.html.

We commend the report to Transport for New South Wales (especially Roads and Maritime Services), the NRMA, and other pro-road interests.
