NEWS RELEASE: Simpler Transit Tickets the Answer to Bridge Closure Chaos

posted Saturday 12 November 2011

The single most useful measure to avert traffic chaos during the January 2012 harbour bridge road closures would be simplified tickets for public transport, according to experienced transit users.

Action for Public Transport has called on the government to issue cheap, dated, pre-purchase all-modes public transport "day" tickets for the two or three weekends that the bridge roadway will be closed.

"For everyday motorists attempting to use public transport, the most bewildering and frustrating hurdle will be the complexity of buying a valid ticket," APT secretary Allan Miles said. "Some railway stations will be closed, and bus drivers would not accept cash fares on PrePay services," he said.

"Unfortunately, although trains will run over the bridge, many sections of the CityRail network will also be closed on each of the weekends," Mr Miles said, "so train travel will involve the irritating transfer to replacement buses." "But," he said, "that still might be better than sitting in traffic at the approaches to the harbour tunnel or Gladesville Bridge."

Mr Miles urged the transport operators to provide more staff and services to assist casual passengers. "A painful experience on one of these days will ensure that a trial user never returns," he said.
