Victoria Road "Upgrade" and the M4-East Motorway - link established

posted Monday 4 August 2008
For twenty months (i.e. since December 2006) the Roads & Traffic Authority and the Roads Minister have been touting the proposed "upgrade" of Victoria Road through Drummoyne and Rozelle as primarily an improvement to bus services for inner North-West Sydney.

The "upgrade" involves converting the existing Transit Lane to a bus lane and the duplication of Iron Cove Bridge, but also increases the number of peak direction general-traffic lanes by a massive 50% - from 2 to 3.

Just for the record, the probable reason for the whole scheme was revealed in a leaked report in the Sydney Morning Herald of 31 July 2008 (pages 1 and 2).

The map on page 2 clearly shows Victoria Road feeding into a motorway tunnel at the city end of the Iron Cove Bridge. The tunnel extends 7km to Sydney Airport.

Neither the Roads Minister, the RTA, nor the local MPs, have ever admitted to this connection, though they must have known about the RTA's plans.
