Provision of car parking - seminar report

URBAN PARKING PROBLEMS AND STRATEGIES

A parking seminar attended by Action for Public Transport on 9th May 2007 revealed that local councils in Sydney are not wholly bent on providing or allowing "parking at any cost" in urban centres, and that public transport and other travel options are given due consideration. In fact, it was acknowledged that, at a certain threshold, parking should be discouraged.

The afternoon was hosted by Marrickville Council and conducted by SGS Economics and Planning. http://www.sgsep.com.au/

The seminar, titled 'Parking and Urban Development: New Perspectives, Innovative Solutions', considered who wants to park their car, where, when, why, for how long, and the perceived and actual cost.

The topics covered by the the three speakers were Parking and Urban Development - The Big Picture, Innovative Parking Practice in Local Government (Marrickville), and Car Parking Performance and Pricing.

Reference was also made to a recent book by a US professor Donald Shoup titled "The High Cost of Free Parking".
