NEWS RELEASE: Beat The Fare Rise

posted Wednesday 21 December 2005
Regular users of popular prepaid tickets can beat the fare rise by stocking up before the fare rise on 3rd January, according to a public transport consumer group.

Mr Allan Miles, a spokesman for Action for Public Transport, said that commuters could buy a supply of the tickets now and give themselves a Christmas present.

“Most FerryTens and bus TravelTens will increase by around one or two dollars on 3rd January,” Mr Miles said, “and TravelPasses without rail content will also rise by $1 or $2.”

Mr Miles said that these popular tickets have no expiry date, so they can be bought now and used later.

“TravelTens already save time and money compared to paying single fares to the bus driver,” Mr Miles said, “and regular users have a chance now to save more money.

Mr Miles said that the largest increase was for the Inner Harbour FerryTen, which will rise by $2.20 to $32.50, over seven percent. “Buying a stock of these is better than leaving your money in the bank,” Mr Miles said.

“Shorter distance TravelTen tickets will also rise by between five and seven percent,” Mr Miles said, “and these are worth buying in bulk also.” He said that a Blue TravelTen will increase by $0.90, a Brown one by $1.10 and a Red one by $1.90.

“The Blue, Orange and Two-Zone TravelPasses will increase by $1,” he said, “and the Pittwater TravelPass by $2. These are increases of about two or three percent.”

Mr Miles said that TravelPass tickets that include rail travel will not increase in price, because there had been no increase in rail fares.
