Series of articles promoting Melbourne public transport

posted Sunday 13 November 2005
We record a series published in The Age, somewhat reminiscent of the Sydney Morning Herald series "Campaign for Sydney" which began in mid-July this year.

Entitled "Off the rails; the failure of public transport", the series began on Saturday 5th November with a spread called "Trial by public transport". Then, on 6th November, "Why the business world is worried", 7th November "Big ideas for a big problem", 8th November "A city divided", and 9th November a call for the union of transport and urban planning.

Many readers' letters appeared and a related article "Tunnel vision: a victory for the road lobby" was printed on 10th November.

The trigger for the series was the publication of a Newman and Kenworthy report "Most Liveable and Best Connected" on 7th November. For a copy of the report, watch the Metropolitan Transport Forum website. For further information, perhaps the best site is Public Transport Users' Association.
