Pensioner Excursion Ticket - Restricted use on private ferries

posted Friday 4 November 2005
Following the increase in price and extension of the geographical coverage of Sydney's Pensioner Excursion Ticket (PET) during 2005, APTNSW became aware of some private ferry operators refusing to accept the ticket.

We sought clarification, and have received the following letter from the Ministry of Transport.

1 November 2005
Dear Mr Eadie

I refer to your email of 27 October about the availability of the Pensioner Excursion Ticket (PET) on some private ferries serving isolated communities.

The PET is not generally available on private ferries, however in instances where a ferry is the only means of public transport from an isolated community, the PET is available to the residents of that community, by arrangement with the local ferry operator. Eligible residents apply for a Pass from their local ferry, which they show each time they purchase or use a PET on the ferry.

The following localities and private ferries are involved in the arrangement:

Locality

Scotland Island, Morning Bay, Elvina Bay & Lovett Bay (Church Point Ferry)

Dangar Island & Little Wobby (Dangar Island Ferry)

Bundeena & Maianbar (Cronulla & National Park Ferry)

Great Mackerel Beach, Coasters Retreat & Currawong Beach (Palm Beach Ferry)

The exclusion of private ferries from the PET arrangements has been noted in advertising and press releases, such as the recent advertising for the extension of PET to Outer Metropolitan areas.

I trust this is of assistance.

Yours sincerely

John Lee
Director General
Ministry of Transport
