Issues Confronting Sydney Bus Operators
posted Wednesday 12 January 2005
A concise statement of the issues confronting bus operators in Sydney
at present is given by Darryl Mellish, Executive Director of
the Bus and Coach Association, in the December 2004 issue of the BCA Bulletin.
We quote:
"December/January does not bring the usual routine for Metropolitan Bus
Operators who are in the midst of trying to
- negotiate new contracts
- introduce Pensioner Excursion Ticket (and multi-ride tickets)
- introduce school Tcards
- understand Fare/Concession reforms and Harmonisation with STA.
This is in addition to the work all operators currently face relating to
- new drug and alcohol laws
- new safety requirements designed to protect passengers
- reforms to the SSTS [School Student Transport Scheme] database
and reporting systems
- further roll out of operator viability audits
- changes to accreditation standards
- industrial issues with both the Bus and Coach awards.
The time has come for the Government to recognize the failure of its
regulatory system in the Metropolitan area and negotiate sustainable
contracts that encourage patronage growth."
