Cheap training for activists at UTS

posted Tuesday 17 February 2004
University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is to run a series of three forums designed to help activists be more effective. The dates are Fridays - 12 March, 18 June, and 10 September.

12 March - New forms of activism.

How do activists organise at the beginning of the 21st century? In different fields such as environmental and social justice campaigns, among union activists and community advocates, efforts are being made to recruit, organise and educate members and activists. What lessons of campaigning and organising can be learned from hearing and discussing the experiences of activists working in these different settings? What is working? What questions still need to be asked?

18 June - Educating the Activists.

Education is a key to developing activists and active members of organisations. The new activist educator is an organiser, teacher, consultant and theorist. What methods are being used today to equip activists to build social movements? Does activist education reflect a democratic agenda or is it largely instrumental? How do we know if educational practices are working? Are new theories of learning be utilised?

10 September - Union and Community Alliances and Coalition Building

What is behind the interest in building alliances between unions and community groups? What differences and similarities are there in organising in the labour movement and organising in the community or social movements? Are the values that shape these different areas of social activism clear and articulated? What is needed to build and sustain effective alliances? What needs to be learned from existing campaigns and alliances?

All forums will be held at the: Centre for Popular Education, University of Technology, Sydney Building 10, (Old Fairfax Building) 235 Jones St, Broadway 9am - 2pm

FEES - $30 for one forum; $50 for two forums; $70 for three forums
