Rally to keep Newcastle branch railway

posted Tuesday 11 November 2003
A group called Save Our Rail will march from St James station to Parliament House in Sydney on Wednesday November 19, to protest against the threatened closure of the rail line from Broadmeadow to Newcastle Terminal.

'Save Our Rail' (SOR) is a group of concerned citizens from the Hunter region.

The Save Our Rail campaigners will be catching the express train that leaves Newcastle Station at 8am. They will travel to St James station via Central and then march to Parliament House in Macquarie Street. The rally will begin at noon with speeches from participants and those parliamentarians supporting the campaign. Delegations from SOR will visit relevant MPs at Parliament House during the rally. There is also to be a protest rally in Newcastle on Saturday December 6 - see http://saveourrail.org.au/.

Greg Berry (phone 4928-4074) is Secretary of the group and Geoff Payne (4926-5328) is President.

The group has passed a motion of no confidence in Newcastle Mayor John Tate and Secretary of the Newcastle Trades Hall Council, Gary Kennedy. Mr Berry said there was a perceived conflict of interest for Mr. Tate and Mr. Kennedy on the rail issue, as both were members of the Honeysuckle Development Corporation, charged with the task of merchandising the Honeysuckle redevelopment project.

It has been reported that Maitland Councillor Bob Geoghegan had urged anyone using the rail service to lobby the Maitland City Council.
