Chatswood Station remodelling announced

posted Sunday 16 March 2003
The concept master plan for the complete remodelling of Chatswood Station has been placed on public display. Changes include raising the track level by one metre and providing a new concourse under two completely new island platforms. Ultimately, the two centre tracks will go to Epping, allowing cross-platform interchange between trains going in the same direction. There will be two ticket barriers, a northern one facing a Victoria Avenue Mall extended under the railway, and a southern one facing a new underpass on the alignment of Thomas St. The usual steps, escalators and lifts to connect the concourse with the platforms are provided, but the escalators are in line, rather than side-by-side (presumably) due to site constraints on platform width.

The bus terminal moves to the north of Victoria Avenue and is in the open at concourse level. Thus bus-rail interchange is achieved with just one change of level. The existing interchange goes completely, which also provides better flow-through to the Remembrance Garden and Chatswood Oval.

The clearance problem with the Albert Avenue underbridge south of Chatswood will also be solved with a higher rail level. Of course the usual home unit development with associated parking is proposed, to help raise funding. The engineering challenge will be to implement it all while keeping trains running on two tracks, prior to the four track configuration required for the Epping link.

The plan is available for inspection at Willoughby City Council offices in Victor St. Chatswood
