Parramatta to Epping Railway proposal - dead?

posted Friday 7 March 2003
Railway analysts claim the Carr government has effectively abandoned half of its biggest railway expansion project.

A spokesman for the recently formed Rail Now Campaign, Mr Philip Howell, says the Parramatta to Epping section of the Parramatta to Chatswood railway may never be built because the number of trains from the proposed North-West rail link, when added to the trains diverted from the Hornsby to Strathfield line, would use all available capacity on the Epping to Chatswood section.

"The Parramatta Rail Link EIS said the line had the capacity to carry up to 15 trains an hour" Mr Howell said. "The plan was to have four from Hornsby and 8 from Parramatta ending up at Chatswood. But the Overview Report on the North-West railway says 8 trains an hour will run from Mungerie Park through Epping to Chatswood and beyond. That means 20 trains an hour from Epping to Chatswood on a line which can only carry 15," he said.

"The Government's plans just don't add up, and the Liberals haven't noticed" he said.

The Rail Now Campaign has called for an explanation of how all the promised lines can be built and says funds for them should be committed now.
