Hegarty's Ferries To Close

posted Monday 9 December 2002
Hegarty's North Shore and cross harbour ferry services will cease operation on 7 January 2003. The service's owner, Captain Cook Cruises, is required to share Jetty No. 6 at Circular Quay with two other cruise operators. They have decided to close the service rather than take up Sydney Waterways' offer to move the services to Jetty No. 5.

Hegarty's run services from Circular Quay to five North Shore wharves: McMahons Point, Lavender Bay, Milsons Point (Luna Park), Jeffrey St and Beulah St. The wharves at McMahons Point and Milsons Point are shared with Sydney Ferries and generate the largest patronage. Hegarty's also run a North Shore-Rose Bay school service once a day in each direction.

This is a good opportunity for a new operator to provide continued services to all five wharves. The North Sydney-Kirribilli area is densely populated and the narrow streets restrict driving and parking. The school run could be maintained and developed to provide a Rose Bay-North Sydney commuter service. Hegarty's were unable to carry commuters from Rose Bay to North Sydney as they did not have a licence from the Dept. of Transport for this service.

Sydney Ferries would be the obvious choice as the new operator. The North Shore service would fit in well with their existing network, and they also have the licence to operate ferries to Rose Bay. Three of the wharves - Lavender Bay, Jeffrey St and Beulah St - may require some maintenance.
