Recent Herald editorials in favour of public transport
posted Saturday 23 November 2002
On 25th June 2002, the lead article in the Sydney
Morning Herald, entitled Freeway running
rail off track, discussed how the recently-opened
M5-East freeway had attracted patronage off the
parallel East Hills railway line. "Quality roads
discourage rail public transport", it concluded.
As the Minister for both Roads and Transport, Mr
Scully's task of evening the balance had become
a lot harder.
On 22nd November 2002, Flip side to faster travel
pointed out that main road conditions around Sydney
had continued to improve, with the result
that some peak-hour travel speeds were faster than in 1990.
"It takes stamina and nerve to resist public clamour
for ever more roads. But applying the brakes,
even tapping on them, should be a surefire way of
encouraging greater public transport patronage if
commuters are offered a useful, integrated alternative."
