Warren Centre report

posted Monday 8 July 2002
The Warren Centre of Sydney University has been conducting a two-year study "Sustainable Transport in Sustainable Cities" into improving Sydney's transport. Its major report was released on 2nd July and argued for much better bus services and for new public transport to be financed from such means as peak-hour tolls on motorways and major roads.

Both the Government and the Opposition quickly announced that they would not seek to fund public transport that way.

Only five days later, the Government announced that it was conducting a study of a proposed road tunnel connection between the M4 at Strathfield and the Inner West Link at Haberfield. This road could cost about $1 billion. Its advantages were described as reducing traffic congestion, saving motorists time.
